Upton House and grounds was bequeathed to The Borough of Poole in 1957 by the Llewellin family. Upton Country Park has open access and is popular with locals and visitors. The Upton Park Management Plan has identified the walled garden as a key area for improvement.
Our initial design concepts explore the many possibilities for the garden. Emerging proposals exhibited at public consultation combine an expression of the historical development with horticultural interest allowing flexible use patterns for seasonal events.
The original owners, the Spurrier family made their money by trading cod from Newfoundland with the Mediterranean and importing goods to Poole. The plan design is resembles a fishbone structure and planting colours textures and scents echo the Mediterranean. Better links to an adjacent café are planned with sitting areas beside a pond reinstated from the historic design and improved teaching facilities for a local horticultural college. Archaeological research using resistivity and magnetrometry has identified the historic path layout which has been incorporated in the design. |
