Tonedale Mill, on the edge of Wellington, was one of the largest integrated woollen textile mills in the south-west. Regeneration proposals for the 5.5 hectare site will provide in excess of 200 residential units together with commercial space, including artisans’ studios and workshops.
The Landscape Practice has drawn up a comprehensive Landscape Masterplan which will help to ensure a robust and cohesive landscape strategy is implemented across the site as a whole, using salvaged materials where possible and appropriate new materials of a suitably high quality, including contemporary street furniture.
Interesting and varied external spaces will be possible which relate to the variety of styles and scales of the buildings, many of which are listed Grade II and II*. Large, light and airy open spaces will contrast with smaller intimate spaces. Where possible external spaces will have a direct association with the 2 water courses running through the site; The Back Stream and Mill Stream, acknowledging their significance to the historical development of the site and again, providing a variety of interesting spaces. The overall design-aim is to arrive at 'streetscapes' which harmonise with the buildings in terms of both materials and layout. |
